Happy New Year is comprised of altered footage from my family’s archive of home videos. The silent film stretches playful and interior moments captured in the aftermath of an impromptu gathering. The camera, operated by my father, moves from subject to subject, as he teasingly asks each woman to follow his directives while he records. The work is a meditation on intimacy, relation, and how Black women negotiate the lens’ loaded gaze.
